How Indian compensation works
Indian offers are usually expressed as CTC (cost to company), an annual INR figure that can bundle base salary, variable/bonus, and the employer’s share of benefits like Provident Fund. When comparing offers, separate fixed base from variable, and check what is included in CTC.
Product companies and well-funded startups typically pay more (and add ESOPs) than IT-services firms for the same role. Global capability centres (GCCs) sit in between and often compete hard for senior talent.
Indicative ranges by role (annual CTC)
Software Engineer: ₹12–45 LPA depending on seniority and stack. DevOps / Platform Engineer: ₹15–42 LPA. Data Engineer: ₹15–40 LPA. Data Analyst: ₹8–28 LPA.
Product Manager: ₹18–50 LPA. Product / UX Designer: ₹12–38 LPA. Engineering Manager: ₹35–70 LPA. Customer Support Specialist: ₹4–14 LPA, with leads higher.
What drives pay
City (Bengaluru is highest; Hyderabad, Pune, and Chennai are typically more favourable), company type (product vs. services vs. GCC), in-demand skills (AI/ML, cloud, distributed systems), and English and communication for cross-market roles.
Notice-period buyouts and joining bonuses are common tools to close candidates who are heavily courted, factor them into your budget for competitive hires.
